Fabric

Background

The Ethereum rollup ecosystem has experienced remarkable growth, with multiple L2s driving scalability, innovation, and adoption. Years of progress have provided the community with valuable insights into design trade-offs and opportunities for collaboration.

Over the past year, based rollup research and development has advanced significantly, aiming to offer an alternative sequencing mechanism that preserves as much of Ethereum’s core properties—liveness, decentralization, and censorship resistance—as possible. Additionally, based rollups seek to address fragmentation within the L2 ecosystem, improve user experience, and enable new forms of L1 composability.

With based rollups now live in production and multiple preconfirmation (preconf) protocols in development and testing on Holesky, we believe the community now has a clearer understanding of design trade-offs and a path forward.

Introducing Fabric: A Community-Driven Initiative

To support this vision, teams across Ethereum propose Fabric (Fabric to Accelerate Based Rollup Infrastructure & Connectivity)—a community-led initiative designed to enhance coordination and establish shared standards for the based rollup ecosystem.

In practice, Fabric will provide a minimal yet essential set of common components for based rollups, serving as a Schelling point for rollup developers to build on and build towards. This initiative stitches together work started last year by Justin Drake and other contributors across the Ethereum ecosystem—and will only progress through continued collaborative efforts.

Fabric: Accelerating Based Rollup Infrastructure & Connectivity

Mission

Fabric is a community-driven effort to accelerate coordination and establish common standards for the based rollup ecosystem. It provides a minimal set of shared components that any rollup can adopt, helping streamline development while maintaining flexibility and decentralization.

This initiative builds on past contributions from Justin Drake and others across the Ethereum ecosystem and relies on ongoing collaboration to drive meaningful progress.

North Stars

The goal of Fabric is to coordinate, develop, and sustain a set of common standards and components that can be adopted by both based and non-based rollup stacks. The initiative focuses on:

  • Aligning on Minimal Standards – Establishing widely accepted baseline standards for the community to collectively adopt.
  • Shipping a Minimal Viable Reference Implementation – Delivering a simple, transparent, and trustless reference implementation of a based rollup stack.
  • Collaborating with Existing Rollup Stacks – Working alongside current rollup ecosystems to support these standards and improve interoperability.

Design Principles

Fabric is built on core design principles that ensure openness, modularity, and inclusivity within the Ethereum rollup ecosystem:

  • Open-Source & Open Development – Everything will be developed in the open and released under MIT/Apache-2.0 licenses.
  • Minimal Stack Lock-In – Fabric’s components will be stack-agnostic, ensuring they can integrate seamlessly with various rollups rather than being designed for a specific stack.
  • Modularity – Fabric will define a minimal set of standards that accelerate based rollup development while still allowing competition and customization (e.g., custom stacks or SDKs).
  • Governance Minimization – Fabric will not be venture-backed, nor will it launch a token or seek monetization. It is a public good, sustained by contributions from the broader Ethereum community.
